UMER MAQBOOL
Srinagar, May 5: Twenty-five year old Bashir Ahmad Bhat has achieved the inspiring distinction of being the first youth from the apple town of Sopore to have cracked the prestigious All India Civil Services examination.
It was not an easy task for Bhat, hailing from Batpora area of Sopore town, to make it to the All India Civil services. Bhat neither had the robust financial background to get coaching from any top academy of the country nor mentoring of any retired or in-service civil servant to get tips for cracking the examination.
Curiously, nobody from Bhat’s family has ever served in the government in any capacity till date. His father Ghulam Hassan is a shopkeeper while his mother Rafiqa Begum is a homemaker. Before joining SKUAST Jammu for pursuing BVSC, Bhat did his schooling from Islamic English Medium School Sopore and Sainik School Manasbal.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Bhat, a veterinarian by profession, said that after completing graduation in Veterinary Sciences in 2010, he started preparing for the state and national level civil services examination. “I had an urge right from my childhood to do something big in life,” he said.
“After studies, my first option was to join government service to support my financially weak family. But I had to wait for the government to advertise the posts of veterinary surgeons so that I could apply. During the period I was looking for the job, I thought of preparing for the civil services examination,” he added.
Luck supported Bashir and he figured at fourth rank in state level Combined Services examination in 2010.
But, Bhat was not content with “limited success” and his aspiration for getting into the prestigious All India civil services grew stronger after getting into Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS).
And finally, his dream of making it to All India Civil Services came true when he figured at 434th rank in the result declared by Union Public Service Commission Friday Bhat credits his family for the marvelous success.
“My success wouldn’t have been possible without the support and prayers of my parents. While I was undergoing studies my family faced the difficulties due to financial constraints, but they did not let my studies suffer at any cost. They sacrificed their comforts for my success,” he said.
According to Bhat, the Sopore youth, like their counterparts from other parts of the valley, are not lacking in intelligence and can get through in any exam.
“Cracking civil services examination is not a difficult task. But what one needs is perseverance and hard work. It pays,” he said.
While Bhat is presently in Kishtwar on state Darshan, as part of KAS training program, there are celebrations at his Batpora home in Sopore.
His family is busy in attending people who are making beeline to congratulate them over success of their son.

Son of Qazi Shamasudin (retired Divisional Engineer of BSNL) and Muneera Masoodi (retired Teacher), Salman said his objective behind joining the civil services is to work for uplift of the downtrodden people.
“A chance to work among common people on ground and to work towards the uplift of marginalized people were the motivating factors for me to try for civil services,” he said, adding that Dr Shah Faesal, IAS-2010 topper was the inspiration for him.
